Jesse specializes in 19th- and 20th-century Italian opera, publishing articles on composers like Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, and Verdi. He has presented papers on opera and film music history, with research interests in musical aesthetics and the intersection of music with literature and poetry. He has contributed to the New Grove Dictionary of Opera and received awards for his dissertation and teaching from New York University.
