Mastering Pronunciation with Patience

I thoroughly enjoyed today’s lesson. Leila was very patient in helping me through my pronunciation difficulties and seemed to understand exactly what I was trying to say, even though I couldn’t say it very well. I like the structure and composition of her lessons (speaking, reading, vocabulary development, etc.) and her emphasis on using Persian during the lessons, even in her explanations. I look forward to making faster progress with her help. خيلي ممنونم

Your Questions, Answered

What is a Joy of Persian Workshop? How is it different from a course?
A course is a self-paced, online program you can do anytime on your own schedule. A workshop is a complete package that includes a self-paced course as a gift, plus a series of scheduled, live group classes on Zoom led by Dr. Leila Seyedghasem. Think of the course as your practice gym and the workshop as your live coaching sessions.
What is the “Flipped Classroom” model you use?

The Flipped Classroom is a modern learning approach that helps you get the most out of your live sessions. It works in two steps:

  1. Prepare: Before each live class, you’ll study specific lessons from your self-paced course to learn new vocabulary and grammar.
  2. Practice: You then join the live Zoom session to actively practice what you’ve learned through conversation, get real-time feedback from Dr. Leila, and ask questions. This way, we don’t waste precious live time on lectures; we use it for what matters most—interactive practice.

What is included in a workshop registration?

When you register for a workshop, you receive:

  • One-year access to the corresponding self-paced online course as a gift 🎁.
  • Participation in all scheduled live group sessions on Zoom (typically 16 sessions of 1.5 hours each).
  • Small class sizes (maximum of 6 students) for personalized attention.
  • Access to recordings of any live sessions you miss.
Who are the workshops for?

We offer workshops for different levels and interests.

  1. Our “Let’s Learn Persian Together” (A1 – A2) workshops are perfect for beginner and elementary students who want live practice and expert guidance.
  2. Our Thematic Workshops (like ‘Damavand’ or ‘Deserts of Iran’) are ideal for intermediate learners who have a solid foundation and want to explore specific cultural topics while expanding their vocabulary.
  3. Our Literature Workshops (like Golestan of Sa’di) are designed for advanced learners who want to delve into classical Persian texts with an expert.
What is the size of a typical workshop?

Our workshops are capped at 6 participants, creating an intimate setting that fosters a more engaging and productive learning environment. This small group size ensures everyone has the opportunity to participate in discussions, ask questions, and get the most out of the interactive learning experience.

What happens if I miss a live session?

No problem! We understand that life can be busy. Every live workshop session is recorded. A link to the recording will be made available to all enrolled students, so you can catch up on anything you missed at your convenience.

What are the technical requirements to join a workshop?

All you need is a stable internet connection and the Zoom application installed on your device. To get the full interactive experience, we also recommend using a device with a working camera and microphone.

For our core language workshops (e.g., A1 & A2): We strongly recommend joining from a desktop computer or tablet. A larger screen makes a big difference during our interactive activities, allowing you to comfortably view shared materials (like the course lesson page), the instructor, and your classmates simultaneously. While it is possible to join from a smartphone, the experience may be limited.

What are the in-workshop rules?

To ensure a productive and positive learning environment for everyone, we kindly ask participants to follow these guidelines:

Technology and Access:

  • We use Zoom for our workshops. Meeting ID and password information will be sent to your email 10 minutes before the class begins.
  • Please ensure you have a stable internet connection and a device with Zoom installed to participate.

Attendance and Participation:

  • We encourage you to attend on time to get the most out of the workshop.
  • Unfortunately, due to the live, interactive nature of the workshops, we cannot offer cancellations, rescheduling, or refunds for late arrivals. However, you are still welcome to join the class in progress.
  • The workshop duration is based on the specific program and will not be adjusted based on individual participation.

Respectful Conduct:

  • We foster a respectful and inclusive learning environment. This means being considerate of your fellow students and instructor by refraining from behaviors like harassment, discrimination, or anything disruptive to the group experience.
  • Instructors reserve the right to remove participants who violate these guidelines. Please note that participants who are warned or removed from class for inappropriate behavior will not be eligible for a credit or refund.

Camera Usage:

Participation with your camera on is encouraged, but not mandatory.

1. Do I need any prior knowledge of Persian to enroll?
  • For absolute beginners: This course is designed for absolute beginners in Persian language — but you must know the Persian alphabet before starting. If you haven’t learned it yet, take our free starter course Effortless Persian: Learn Persian with Rumi, available free until September 30, 2026 (thanks to the DhunAnand Foundation). Use code RUMI-FREE-DA-JOP at checkout.
  • If you have some prior knowledge of Persian: Start with our free self-evaluation test to check your level and find the course that suits you best: Placement Test. For a more personalized assessment, you can also book a private consultation with Dr. Leila Seyedghasem to tailor your learning path to your goals and current skills.
2. Do I need to know how to type in Persian to complete the course exercises?

No, you don’t need to know Persian typing to complete our current exercises — we’ve designed them for beginners without this skill. However, we highly recommend learning to type in Persian during your studies, because it helps you:

  1. Access authentic materials: Search in Persian to read news, watch videos, and explore online content.
  2. Connect with learners: Participate in our community on WhatsApp, Telegram, and forums.
  3. Boost fluency and speed: Typing builds muscle memory and improves your overall learning.

While typing isn’t required at the moment, we may add optional exercises—like flashcards and fill-in-the-blanks—in the future to help you develop this valuable skill. Remember, typing in Persian is an investment that unlocks richer learning and deeper connections.

3. Can I learn and complete all tasks using just my phone for this Persian language course?

Yes! Our courses are 📲 mobile-friendly, but a few complex exercises (<5%) may work better on a larger screen. For activities involving extensive reading or intricate tasks, using a computer or tablet can make learning more comfortable.

4. Is there a free trial or introductory period available?

Yes! The first lesson of each course is a live demo, no signup required. It’s a great way to experience our teaching style and see how effective our courses are before committing.

Bonus tip: Check our website or social media for occasional promotions or discounts on full courses — we regularly offer special deals to make learning Persian more accessible.

5. What textbook is your core courses based on?

Our Persian language core courses are based on the “Fārsi bīyāmuzīm!” (Let’s Learn Persian!) by Dr. Hassan Zolfaghari (Tarbiat Modarres University), Dr. Mahbod Ghaffari (University of Cambridge), and Dr. Behruz Mahmoodi Bakhtiari (University of Tehran). The book series is a comprehensive and effective way to learn Persian, and the online course builds on this foundation to provide a flexible and engaging learning experience.

Features of this book:

As the authors note in the preface, the book boasts several features, including:

  1. All four language skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are given equal and parallel attention and all these skills are strengthened with the help of numerous exercises.
  2. We have used the cognitive approach in language teaching. The manifestation of this approach can be seen in exercises and activities; For example, language learners will be able to discover the rules of the language after performing a variety of exercises.
  3. The teaching of the spoken form of Persian language is carried out alongside the written form.
  4. Active learning, cohort learning, and creative learning methods are used in the compilation and design of lessons as well as in teaching methods. In all this series, the learner learns the course material with the help of the group and with a lot of practice and repetition.
  5. The communicative teaching method has been used in the teaching of Persian language as a second language. This method puts a person in interaction with another person in a group so that he can deepen his learning and use it in different language situations.
  6. Learners gradually become familiar with language situations and how to use them, such as greetings, shopping, introducing yourself and others, telling the time, requesting and rejecting requests, saying goodbye, compliments, etc. The structure of the book is designed in such a way that learners learn about 60 practical situations of the language.
  7. It has been tried to use more common words between Persian and English languages.
  8. Special attention has been paid to the Persian script and its teaching. In the workbook and exercises, many opportunities are provided for writing and strengthening related fine motor skills.
  9. Our teaching method is to use the general method in reading and the analytical method in writing. Therefore, when reading, the learner is expected to learn the form of reading in general by considering the image of the object and its repetition by the teacher and the tape, and then break it down into its syllables and phonemes.
  10. In this series, the learner will get acquainted with Persian culture, language, literature and art, celebrities and great people of Iran, and historical and cultural works and monuments of Iran.
6. How did you transform the reference book into an interactive online course?

We used this book as the basis for the preparation of the online course. However, in order to make optimal use of web technology, and to make this course as self-study as possible, the following minor changes have been made to the course materials:

  1. At the beginning of each lesson, the objectives of that lesson are presented.
  2. At the beginning of each lesson, new words are presented along with the audio file of word pronunciation, related image and English translation.
  3. After visiting the publishing house several times, we could not get the audio CD that accompanies the book. A few months later, we found the audio files on the Internet and realized that the audio files of each lesson were not separated according to the exercises of that lesson. In addition to separating this audio file according to lesson exercises, we also separated the written type and the spoken type. Also, to further improve the learning experience, we differentiated the audio file of the spoken type with a different background color.
  4. In necessary cases (exercise instructions, dialogues, long texts, …) English translation has been added so that the student can better understand the exercise / text.
  5. Since most of the students don’t have a Farsi keyboard on their computer and don’t know how to type Farsi, many exercises in the book could not be converted directly into an online exercise. Therefore, it was necessary to change its format while maintaining the content of the exercise. For example, we turned exercises that were filling in the blanks into drawing words. In the exercises where the student has to provide a short answer, we turned the exercise into dragging and dropping words. Or we hid the answer inside an accordion so that the student first tries to answer and then opens the accordion to see if the answer is correct or not.
  6. There were other exercises that were designed for working in class and group practice, we changed them a little so that it can be done by self-study or with a private teacher. (Of course, we will provide these exercises along with more specialized exercises in group classes.)
  7. In some cases, some auxiliary exercises were added. Some of these exercises are from related workbooks and others are designed by the online course designer. It has been tried to add interesting exercises that cannot be presented in book format to the course by using web multimedia facilities. Things like Image hot spot, …
  8. According to the cognitive approach of the book, grammar rules are not taught directly. In some cases, this approach causes a self-learner to not be able to discover and learn the relevant grammar rules. Therefore, to help these students, in the necessary cases, the grammar rules of that course have been explicitly taught.
7. Will I have access to the textbook?

Yes, you will have access to the digital (PDF) version of the book. To comply with Iranian copyright laws and regulations, we require all students to purchase the book through the Taghche platform. Here’s how it works:

1. Account Creation:

  • You will provide us with the email address you use for the Joy Of Persian website.
  • We will create an account for at Taaghche website you using that email address.
  • You will receive an email from Taaghche website with a password.
  • You will need to forward that email to us (admissions @ joyofpersian.com) to activate your account.

Notes: Anyone can purchase the book directly from the Taaghche website. However, the website is only available in Persian, which may be a barrier for non-Persian speakers.

2. Book Purchase:

  • We will purchase the book on your behalf using our own account.
  • The book will be gifted to your Taaghche account.

3. Accessing the Book:

  • You can access the book by logging into the Taaghche website or app.

Notes:

  1. While we understand this process may be inconvenient for some users, and acknowledge the limitations of the PDF reading experience (Note 3), adherence to Iranian copyright laws necessitates this approach. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
  2. We are working on alternative solutions to make the book more accessible to non-Persian speakers. In the meantime, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
  3. The book is provided in PDF format, accessible on both Windows and mobile applications (Android and Apple). However, reading the PDF version within these applications can be cumbersome, as our experience indicates. Locating the corresponding audio files also presented a significant challenge. After diligently searching the Taagcheh website and elsewhere, including two visits to the publisher’s bookstore in Tehran, we confirmed that the audio files were unavailable at the time. Fortunately, we later discovered them by chance on the publisher’s Aparat account. Unfortunately, these audio files are not segmented according to lesson exercises, further undermining a smooth user experience.

Driven by the limitations of the existing format and its impact on learner satisfaction, we were determined to make the book more accessible to Farsi students. That’s why we meticulously converted the reference book into an interactive online course (details in FAQ #6). This shift empowers learners with a smoother, more engaging experience, amplifying the enjoyment of reading and learning from the material.

8. What is the learning approach used in these Farsi courses?

These courses utilize the “Fārsi bīyāmuzīm!” (Let’s Learn Persian!) textbooks, with each volume corresponding to a level (A1-A2, B1-B2, C1-C2). Each book offers 30 lessons with dedicated review sessions at regular intervals (lessons 10, 20, 30…).

The curriculum progresses smoothly, with A1 covering lessons 1-15 of Volume 1 and A2 covering lessons 16-30. This ensures a gradual build-up of skills and avoids overwhelming learners.

Focus on Real-World Situations:

Throughout the program, you’ll gradually gain confidence in handling various everyday situations, such as:

  • Greetings and Introductions: Learn to say hello, goodbye, introduce yourself and others, and exchange pleasantries.
  • Daily Interactions: Navigate common scenarios like shopping, telling time, and requesting help.
  • Expressing Your Thoughts: Master giving and receiving compliments, expressing opinions, and making polite requests.

By the end, you’ll be equipped with knowledge of approximately 60 practical situations, empowering you to interact confidently in daily life.

Engaging Learning Methodology:

Each lesson starts with a comprehensive vocabulary list relevant to the upcoming topic, followed by an engaging dialogue or monologue presented in both spoken and formal audio formats. This dual approach reinforces both natural flow and proper pronunciation.

To solidify your understanding, each lesson includes around 12 exercises. As you progress, the exercises increase in number and complexity, challenging you to apply your learning effectively.

Grammar Discovery with Support:

The courses follow a cognitive approach where grammar rules are primarily discovered through exercises. This fosters deeper understanding and retention. However, recognizing that self-learners might encounter challenges, we provide clear explanations of key grammar rules when necessary. This ensures you have a solid grasp of both grammar concepts and practical application.

9. Does the core courses require me to purchase additional courses?

No. Each core course, such as “Let’s Learn Persian! (A1)”, is a complete and self-contained program. No additional purchases are required to finish your level.

10. Does the course offer live sessions or one-on-one tutoring?

1. Online Classes (1-on-1 Tutoring):

  • Flexible schedule: Design a learning plan that fits your life, ensuring maximum progress.
